A Program for Teens from Family Life Services

We have launched our new program "Choosing Chastity" and have gotten rave reviews from the student participants.

Choosing Chastity

The messages from much of society about sexuality are very strong. Unfortunately, they are frequently based more on wishful thinking than on reality. Teens who have been taught the "safe sex" message are often shocked to find themselves pregnant and left alone by someone they thought loved them. Nobody wants that outcome. Sexuality is supposed to be a positive dimension of who we are, not a source of stress and potential disaster.

If you, as a teen or young adult, are going to make wise choices, you must know the consequences of those choices. The Choosing Chastity workshop provides an opportunity to reflect on the meaning and importance of chastity before you find yourself in tempting situations. It helps you understand what chastity is and is not, and why choosing chastity is a freeing, "take charge," decision rather than a burdensome sacrifice of life's pleasures. It helps you understand what deep down you may already know: that there is a whole lot more to sex than fleeting experiences.

Let's be clear: Choosing Chastity is not a sex education program. We are promoting chastity, the virtue of using sexuality as God intended, the virtue of being integrated and whole rather than a slave to your (or worse – someone else's) passing passions. This involves maintaining purity of the whole person: body, mind, soul, imagination and heart. For single people, chastity involves abstinence, refraining from sexual activities.

The Choosing Chastity program has been developed with help from a Family Ministry Mini-Grant through the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lansing by volunteers of Problem Pregnancy Help, one of the local crisis pregnancy centers. It was developed by educators as an interactive, informative workshop providing opportunities for student input and reflection. The materials are based on the Sacred Scripture, and Focus on the Family's abstinence based program. The workshops have been successfully presented in many area churches including St. Francis, St. Thomas, Christ the King, St. Mary and Holy Spirit and St. Michael Lutheran School in Wayne. It is now being coordinated by Family Life Services.
